Preferred Anti-Zombie Weapons: Pick 3

Alright guys, with Braaaaaaains 3 coming up next month, I've decided to ask if you could carry only three weapons for World War-Z and the ensuing Apocalypse, what would they be, what attachments would they have, and why? And please, no trashing other people's weapon choices; if they want to die a painful death at the hands of a zombie, let them. It means we will have less people to share resources with.

I'll start. I'd carry an AA-12 with a drum mag, as it's got some good stopping power and high ammo capacity, but I'd keep it on semi. I'd also carry an M4 with flip to side 3x magnifier, and a red dot sight. And final weapon would be a tomahawk. Its compact, can be wielded one hand, and can be easily implanted in a zombie spine.

REMEMBER this is just for fun, and to see what people think, NO TRASHING PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

m14 - scoped with EBR stock for distance and scouting
usp 45 - with silencer, only because the 45 is subsonic and the usp is my baby
cutlass - nice close in sword used for blade attack, not point attack. Plus... its an enlisted navy thing.

Well my first pick would obviously be the Thunder Gun. Then the Wunderwaffe DG-2, and then the Porter's X2 Ray Gun.

1. Kriss Vector SBR w/ QD suppressor
2. Glock 21 (in .45 ACP)
3. 16-18 inch Kukri knife - if I want cut something, I want to cut something.

Perks of the Vector/Glock is that not only is the ammo the same between the two, the Vector accepts Glock 21 magazines allowing for not needing to carry different magazines/pouches, etc.

M16/AR-15 variant for marksmanship and distance plus reliability
M1911- for stopping power and close encounters
Ideally a Katana Sword for its cutting power, but I might settle for a Tomahawk.

I think he's just talking about AO Zombie weapons^.
1. Ruger 10/22 with 4x32 scope
2. Smith and wesson model 422 pistol
3. Katana

This would work for me except the katana; I don't have one.

I have been doing a lot of research on zombies lately because I am currently writing a book for it. Let's not get into the debate of rather or not zombies could exist, because that's a debate for a different topic. For this discussion, let’s assume zombies are a real threat, and you need to choose a means of combatting them or defending yourself from them. So I will break it down with a rather lengthily explanation (for the internet)

For those with IADD here is the tl;dnr version:
1 - .22 Ruger Rim Fire .22 Semi-Automatic
2 – LOBO (“Lobotomizer”) Multi-function axe/e-tool
3 – Saiga .410 Semi-Auto tactical shotgun

For the rest of you:

First, let’s go over some of the basics of zombie behavior, basic anatomy and function, the dangers of contact, and of course, how to effectively combat them.

Part 1: The Zed virus and the human/animal body
The first thing you need to keep in mind, (remember, for this discussion, we assume that zombies are real), is that, first and foremost this is a contagious disease, and in all likely hood, any contact with an infected person, before or after the rising, means contamination. Without going into cellular biology and a great deal of detail about the blood brain barrier, let’s just say that the likely candidate of a zombie virus will come from a mutation of the rabies virus. This also means there are some key elements to factor in.
- Rabies, and it’s mutated version, is zoonotic. This means it can be transmitted by any warm blooded animal. So Resident Evil zombie dogs? Absolutely a real threat.
- Like rabies, the virus can lay dormant and incubate for up to 6 years. Stew on that a moment… 6 years of being infected without showing a single sign of it until possibly an unexpected death occurs and the virus springs into action.
- Transmission primarily through bite, but any fluid contact means contamination. (Remember the last bullet point? Now add “bodily fluid exchange” to the 6 year dormant virus…)
So what happens once a person is infected and showing signs? In short? The obvious… But let’s discuss a little more about post human death and viral control of the host body. On death, everything that made that person a person, dies with it. There is nothing human about what rises later. The zombie does not think, it does not have emotions, logic or tactics, and most importantly, it does not have fear. Humans are driven by fear. Fear of being cold, hungry, and homeless motivates most of us to work for a living, even jobs we don’t like. In war, fear is what breaks an enemy. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, we called it “Shock and Awe”. Explosions, loud sounds, sudden strikes without warning all designed to trigger the human fear response. The living human body is controlled through delicate balance of chemicals including hormones. The onset of sudden stress causes various glands in the body to produce Catecholamines without our knowing it. Adrenaline is one such catecholamine, and the most commonly known. Catecholomines are, at their extreme, responsible for “fight of flight” response in all animals. Without a properly functioning brain to process any sudden trauma, either environmental or physical, these hormones will not be released, nor will they be processed in the brain. All combat has been, rather the method inventors knew it or not, are designed around the brain’s ability to process trauma. 1000 years ago, we used to think in terms of, pain, dismemberment, or dispatch. Today we know that it is all just a chemical response to various forms of trauma, and combat today is about finding new ways to exploit or induce the same response with the greatest efficiency, least amount of risk, and the highest impact. “Shock and Awe” was just one method.
Zombies cannot be affected in this manner. I will say it again zombies are incapable of this response. They do not have the biological function to process any form of trauma. They do not recoil from the pain of being shot. They do not misstep from a sudden deep gash wound in the leg. They may stumble from impact, but that is basic physics at work.
This brings us to the next topic.

Combat: It’s not about center mass. It’s not about disabling. It’s all about the head shot.
Did you ever wonder why typical body armor only covers the torso? The most common answer I’ve gotten received is “cost”. The truth is, the torso is the largest, easiest target to hit, and it also happens to contain most of the body’s vital organs. A zombie has no need for these organs, and within a week of human death, those organs are transformed into a black sludge as the digestive acids begin to eat away at their interior. Hitting a zombie anywhere will not produce the results of hitting a human in the same place. Combat rifles (burst fire or auto fire) are practically useless against a zombie because they are designed to affect the most mass of the body. Combat training with these types of weapons are also designed for an effective combat range of 150ft or more. CQB is a different matter, but the weapons used for CQB are also different than field weapons. Most people can go to a range, set up a target, and probably pull off a good amount of head shots. But, as any military sniper can tell you, shooting a paper target, and shooting a moving human head is another matter entirely. It is difficult, and the farther the distance, the less likely your chances of success. But in the case of zombies, you have no other option. Unless you plan on spending hours training (or retraining for some) yourself to target the human head, your effective distance is now in the 30ft or less range. Now keep in mind, with enough ammo, you could pull off the necessary head shots. But not only is this a waste of the now most valuable asset you have, but depletes your reserve against other zombie targets. That is simply too much risk for pay off. The best risk to pay off range is going to be 30ft or less, even to the properly trained. So now we have to rethink our strategy in dealing with zombies and what sort of weapons we have to consider.
.22LR: The best ammo, hands down.
Before you start typing a heated response about “Stopping power” or “efficient internal damage” or “exit wounds”, go back and reread all that text above here, “stopping power” and “internal damage” or “exit wounds” all refer to how the human body reacts to trauma. They reference to the body’s reaction to sudden trauma of the expanding damage in the human body. Simply put, the body usually blacks out or dies from the shock of trauma to the internal organs than from bleed out. And since zombie biology simply does not allow for that sort of reaction, you need to throw that logic out the window. Basically, it’s like fighting a robot, specifically a Terminator, and the only true way to keep it from taking your life is to destroy its CPU, located in the skull. It might look human, but it isn’t. So why .22LR? Multiple reasons:
1 – It can penetrate skull up to 150 feet just as easy as any other caliber. Look it up, watch some tests on YouTube… The proof is out there.
2 – Most .22LR magazines hold more rounds per mag than any other caliber.
3 – The rounds are CHEAP. A 500 count box of Remington hollow points run $20-$30
4 – The rounds are LIGHT. Carrying a thousand rounds of 7.62 weighs a HELL of a lot more than 1000 rounds of .22lr
5 – The rounds are SMALL. You could literally fit 1000 rounds of .22LR in your leg pockets of your basic cargo pants. Try that with 5.56.
6 – The rounds are QUIET. .22LR rounds can be completely silenced with a suppressor, eliminating the risk of every door in the city bursting open and flooding the streets with zombies because you popped off a round from your 12 gauge.
7 – The rounds have no recoil. When you have to deal with pin point accuracy with the least amount of waste, avoiding recoil is a MUST.

Frankly, there’s a reason the old school cold war spies always carried a silenced .22 as a primary weapon.

So let’s get down to the reason we all came here.

1.
Weapon Class: Firearm
Weapon of Choice: Ruger .22 Rim-Fire Semi-Auto Pistol
Modifications: Silencer; Laser Sight
Ammo: .22LR Stinger or .22LR Hornet
Logic: Weapon is SUPER reliable. Easy to clean, operate, and maintain. Easily fits a silencer. Doesn’t have a rail for accessories, but you don’t always need one, they are for convenience…

2.
Weapon Class: Melee
Weapon of Choice: The LOBO (Lobotomizer) custom E-Tool
Modifications: Athletic Grip Tape
Logic: The LOBO is a design by Max Brooks from his novel World War Z. The LOBO, short for the Lobotomizer, is a modified military E-Tool. The spade of the E-Tool is outfitted with a welded band of sharpened steel along the side, which is beveled to create an axe. The Handle is modified so instead of an inverted triangle handle, the triangle is offset so the LOBO can be wielded as a double bladed axe. The tool can still be folded up, and can still be used as a shovel. The spade tip is a hard right angle instead of the softer rounded of the traditional E-Tool. This weapon offers the benefit of giving the fighter enough range to keep away from the claws of the infected, but not too long to be cumbersome.

3.
Weapon Class: Firearm
Weapon of Choice: Saiga .410 Semi-Auto tactical shotgun
Modifications: Tac-Light, Laser Sight
Ammo: Remington #5 Buckshot
Logic: This is a back-up weapon. If you get yourself stuck in a swarm and surrounded, you won’t be overly concerned with noise. Your first priority is escape, and to do that, you need a hole. .410 gauge is the shotgun equivalent of a .22LR. They are small, light, and don’t pack a big recoil. The Saiga is designed to house the .410 in a magazine, and loads similar to an AR. The shotgun cone spray means you don’t have to take the time to line up your sights to the head, and when you are surrounded, you need speed, and speed means loss of accuracy.
