Tips for sellers....

I've had a rather unpleasant experience (rather, I'm HAVING a rather unpleasant experience since the transaction isn't finished) purchasing an airsoft rifle from a private individual, so I thought I make take a few minutes and provide some pointers to the less business saavy in the event they feel the need to sell some of their gear.

*** A brief bit of back history...

I contacted an individual to purchase an item, and after finalizing the deal, I sent payment via Paypal. This was on July 20th. The seller told me he'd ship around the 25th. Unfortunately, I was leaving for my 2 weeks of Nat'l Guard AT, but I warned the folks in my office to expect a package around the 1st of August.

I return to work on the 13th. No package. No email explaining why there was no package. I send a PM asking "Where is the package?". The reply:"Oh, it must have gotten sent back. I guess I screwed up the addy." At this point, I would have been trying to contact the buyer to let him know what's up. I get nada.

Not to be harsh, but that is a pretty screwed up way to handle a sale. I know this guy is at least 18, so he can't say he doesn't know what he's doing. He says he has a lot going on. Fine. I can sympathize....BUT WHEN YOU'VE BEEN PAID SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS, YOU'VE ACCEPTED A COMMITMENT TO PROVIDE THE ITEM YOU WERE PAID FOR!!!! If it was a death in the family I might be willing to cut the guy a break, but otherwise...we're talking a trip to the post office.

Anyway, I reconfirm the addy. He says fine, my goal is to get it out tomorrow. I PM the next day..."Did you meet your goal?" No, he hasn't. He'll get it tomorrow. I tell him okay, please let me know when it ships.

No contact for two days. Today I PM him...has it shipped? If so, when? Can I get an ETA. He replies "Yes, it's shipped." That's it. So seeing that it's 3 pm now, I think I can safely assume I'll not be using my new gun when we play Sunday.

So let's analyze this and see what we can learn about how to properly conduct a transaction. ***

1) Maintain good communications - This means answer questions in a timely manner, let the buyer know you've received payment, let the buyer know you've shipped his stuff and when he might expect to recieve it

2) Use all communication methods provided - If a buyer provides you with an alternate email, by all means, USE IT!!! Some of us work, we can't be checking AO every 5 minutes to see if there is a PM.

3) Have the stuff ready to ship when you get the money - By the time you receive payment, the shipping addy should already be confirmed. The item should be boxed up and ready to go. The first thing you do once you get paid is ship it.

4) Again, keep the buyer in the loop - Let him know it's been shipped. Let him know the expected ETA. And most importantly, if something goes wrong, let the buyer know immediately!!! You've already got the guy's money, the least you can do is be very proactive in fixing the problem. At the very least, ANSWER HIS QUESTIONS! More than once I've figured I was ripped off. Only the fact that a couple of the guys I play with know the seller and have vouched for him has prevented me from getting really belligerant here AND with the local PD. I mean I've been waiting for 4 weeks...I don't think it's wrong for me to be a little PO'd.

Anyway....I hope this is helpful. It certainly feels good to vent. Feel free to add your own tips!

UPDATE! I heard from my seller today. Appears he forgot to include one part of the agreed upon package AND he discovered something wrong with another part that requires the specific piece to be sent back to the distributor for repair/replacement.

So....almost a month has past since I sent payment, and I STILL don't have the gear I purchased and what I SHOULD be recieving soon will be missing two pieces....one of which is in the hands of a third party. So with that, let me add to my list....

5) Insure you have thoroughly inspected your item for any defects. Correct or note those defects to potential buyers BEFORE making the sale.

6) When you ship the item, SHIP EVERYTHING AGREED UPON. Check, double check, then check one more time to make sure you didn't leave out some part.

An update? Well as of today, I have gotten only the one portion of my total purchase. Now in the seller's defense, I have JUST gotten my laptop back (my only computer) from the corporate IS dept. I had three PMs waiting on me from the seller, dated 8/26, 8/31 and 9/4. The one from 9/4 stated that the last remaining two items were shipped that day and I could expect delivery on Saturday (which is unfortunate, because I had him ship to my work address thinking I'd get the good the last Monday or Tuesday in FREAKING JULY!!!!!!). So in short, I'll let ya know next Monday.

Now, about the one thing I did receive...it was an airsoft rifle (I'll omit the type as that'd most likely ID the seller). It was MOSTLY in the condition the seller described, but not exactly. I do not doub the "mod" in question is in the best interest of functionality, but I'd like to add to my "Tip" list...

7) Be sure you describe each and every mod to the buyer!!! Even if it is something as mundane as replacing a stock screw with something from Home Depot!!!

I was rather appalled with the packaging, but as I was buying a used gun from an individual, I didn't rupture a blood vessel over it. It was (along with the mags) kinda dirty...a decent cleaning would've been nice, but I guess everyone can't be as anal as me. LOL

The gun chrono'd what he claimed, operated well, and I was generally pleased. If only everything else had come, I probably would've been sporting some wood.

It was with myself that this event took place. I have been in contact with the seller and am resolving this issue as we speak.

LOL Red, you needn't to have outed yourself like that.

Yeah, this transaction has been wearing my patience thin, but I don't think it's due...at least most of it...to Red's apathy or lack of gray cells. Your (Red's) PM about the scope and cheekpiece has me wondering. The SVD was also sent back the first time, IIRC. Maybe your local PO has some employee riding the short bus to work.

Don't get me wrong, I think you could have handled that better....like a PM saying "Hey Allen, the SVD was returned to me" BEFORE I got back from AT to find no package and PMing you to find out what was up.

Anyway.....yes, Red is doing a lot better in the "resolution" phase of this transaction. No, I don't think he's an idiot.

As for the iTrade thing, I have no idea of what you speak. LOL

Final Update

Well, I FINALLY got the rest of the stuff in. Please note the date. From July 20th to September 14th. I think I can safely say no one should criticize my patience. A few last tips.....

8) Include any documentation. Granted, I didn't ask Red for any on the PSO-1 scope, but it'd be nice to know what battery to get.

9) Don't depend on your employer's shipping dept. After talking to Red, I would guess that is one reason his initial shipments were returned to him.

10) Carefully package your shipment. Mine came in what appeared to be a cut-up KSC pistol box mummified (and I do mean "mummified") in duct tape. Yes, it arrived safely, but I had a hell of a time getting into it. I suppose I could have cut it open, but I wasn't real sure that I'd not damage the items inside if I did.

I will point out that Red offered me a fairly generous partial refund if he didn't ship the scope, but I didn't think I could get a replacement scope for what he was offering.

So....there are my tips. Enjoy.
