Black Friday: The Insanity

Well, I have been really busy and have'nt even posted since summer (Airsoft God forgive me), so this is really exciting for me.

I was just wondering how many of you crazy people got up in the mad hours of the morning to go shopping and brave the zombie crowds. I thought getting a new LCD moniter for my CPU at Best Buy (or a 360/w Halo 3) at Wally World, but then decided that it was way too cold and I hold my sanity dear to me. The idea of the hordes of flesh eating monsters they call "early birds" that roam Wal Mart on that dreadful day was just too much horror.

I believe people started posting tents around 4:30 PM Thankgiving Day at the Best Buy near me.

If you did go shopping, how early did you get up, what did you get, was it even worth it, and are you a zombie now?

I was smart enough to not go out that day. However, I do find it amazing how early some people wake up to go get a head start on that stuff. Kohl's actually opened up at 4am! I don't know about the rest of you, but if I am awake at 4am on Black Friday, I'm in the bathroom giving a flightless bird swimming lessons.

I refuse to do any shopping on Black Friday. Retailers have turned it into a rush to get Christmas Shopping started and basically ruin what should be a quiet weekend of Thanksgiving with Frenzied Greed.

And personally, what do you have to gain by going into a store where your fellow patrons will walk right over you just to get something from a shelf. Selection goes straight to hell. In the end, you're better off buying a gift card and waiting until the store restocks the items you're looking for.

At 4am there wasnt a lot of traffic out in Columbus. I was just comming home from the Paul Van Dyk show up at BoMA, and I was amazed at how few people were actually out, except for the 1100 or so that were at the show.

Happy Black Friday

Seriously...is this really necessary? I have to wonder if there is anyone left in America who understands what the holiday season is really about anymore.

That's just terrible. Those people need to be brought to justice! That's just completely not right. My prayers go out to the victim and the family, hopefully they get some justice for this awful thing.

Well, even if they don't get caught, they will get what is coming to them. God and karma will take care of it.

I've witnessed this kind of activity first-hand. Back in the early 90's, when Beanie Babies were all the rage, my (then) wife asked me to tread down to the local hospital's gift shop to hunt for a particular one that was rumored to be arriving that day. She had to work, and asked me to go instead, but warned to get there right when the store opened.

Upon arriving, a small crowd had already formed at the door, and was filled with eager women between the ages of probably 20 and 80. When the clerk unlocked the door to the store, the mob pushed inside so violently, the door swung back and sandwiched the elderly clerk between it and the front window hard enough to give her a bloody nose and a cut above her eye from her glasses being pressed against her face. I was the only one who even noticed, much less stopped to help her.

After helping the woman to the counter to sit down and making sure she was okay, I turned around to see the carnage the angry mob had caused to the store as she called hospital security. Displays were turned over. The greeting card aisle looked like a tornado had hit it. Several women were arguing and playing tug of war with what must've been the last available items. One burst apart at the seams, which caused a fight of purse swinging. Some of the women left angrily, spewing profanity. I'm pretty sure a couple crept out the door without paying.

As the line began to form at the cash register, I helped the clerk by trying to keep the women orderly. They still insisted and shouted that they be the ones to be rung up first, up until security arrived. The women were told to hand over their items, and the store was closed. The clerk began receiving treatment for her injuries as medics came in shortly thereafter. As I began walking into the parking lot, the mob had reformed outside as the women argued over how they had been wronged by this injustice. Some were even talking about storming the store again and breaking through the door.

As I reached my car, the clerk came running through the parking lot with a gift bag in her hand. The elderly woman kissed my cheek, thanked me several times, and went back inside. Inside the bag was the item I had been sent to get before all the drama started. She had purchased it for me herself. I still have that teddy bear, tucked away in a box somewhere as a reminder of the event. For you see, that little old lady, the clerk at the hospital gift shop, was a volunteer. She donated her own time to work there for free. And that day, she could've been crushed to death by a mob over a $6.00 teddy bear.

That hospital clerk, the elderly lady whose life was so blatantly disregarded that day...was my grandmother. She does most of her shopping online now.

In my opinion there should be more civil liabilty on behalf of these stores. Possibley cities, or townships passing ordinances requiring security, and regulation overall. I hate to even say stuff like that , because I hate taking away from individuals personal freedoms. I went out on Black Friday one time, and I saw a man fighting a woman in a Meijers. I dropped my stuff and walked out, never again, its the worst of humanity, a bunch of greedy people.

It really disgusts me how ****ing stupid some people are. Man I'd love to take a baseball bat to each of the morons who started that... they deserve it...

And yesterday on the way to my grandma's for dinner people started camping out at bestbuy... at 2 in the afternoon. Get a freakin' life and enjoy a holiday for what it really is. And then commercials only go on and provoke further idiocy.

I hate people.

I blame retailer for encouraging this garbage and for allowing it to happen in their stores. With the economy as bad as it is, encouraging this level of consumerism just to make up for otherwise crummy sales during the year is wreckless and irresponsible.

I think if a few lawsuits hit the retailers for encouraging it, maybe they would think about doing more to prevent it.

I don't believe there should be any additional law put into place, but I think suing or penalizing companies for encouraging this type of behavior might be the way to go.

Until then, I refuse to participate in Black Friday. If I want something and its out of stock, I can always wait until its in stock. Most of this stuff is not crucial to me living and breathing, so I'm not in that much of a hurry to part with my cash just to prop up a retailers closing quarter.

And those of you who think people should be bashed for being violent, yeah. Fighting violence with violence can result in you being locked away from your friends and family. At this time of year, it is truly the most miserable thing you can think of it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, no matter how justified you feel a beating is.

Just so you guys know how bad it was By the end of the day 8 people had been sent to the Hospital. I hate this so called "holiday".

This reminds me of when the PS3 and Xbox 360 first came out. I remember hearing on the news about mobs of people literaly camping outside doors for it to come out. Once even hearing about someone stabbing a person that he thought cut him in line while waiting for the new PS3 to come out. On another note, wouldn't there be some sort of video survailence watching over he entrances and exits that could be watched to find the SOB who trampled the poor guy?

You know what's sad about black friday, 99% of the stuff bought on that day aren't presents....they are kept by the buyer.
If systema put PTW's on sale for $400 and were told that AA or AS had only 100 of them, would you camp out sunday night when the sale starts at 0500 monday morning? Come on people.....you know you would.

I wouldn't.

Along with probably several million people, I don't understand the logic behind camping out hours/days in advance to get a good price. Would the price intrigue me and inspire me to buy? Certainly. However, I would NEVER go camp out somewhere that early in the hopes of cashing in. At best, I would arrive 30 minutes before the store opened.

I think what's sader is that some family now no longer has a father or a grandfather, or a son, etc...
