Stormy Weather

After watching on the news what happened in Oklahoma I started thinking of the last time we had a large storm (Something more than your usual "Darn there goes the power".

I can't really remember the last time in Central Ohio that we had anything overly threatening. Would someone mind recounting the last time we were hit with a big storm?

I remember when we were stationed in Lubbock Texas we would get these monster black wall clouds that scared the @#%@# out of me (I was eight). I know that people get hurt in big storms but man do I love witnessing the wrath of mother nature.

Not in Central Ohio, but Blue Ash got hit by a bad F4 tornado back in '99. Here is a link if you care to read about it.

Few years ago it took me about 40 minutes to complete a 20 minute drive because of the detour I had to take to go around the road that was blocked due to a power box getting zapped and blowing up. The many times I had to get out and move branches in the wind and pouring rain didn't help my time either. I live right by the lake though.

So I've heard rumors about this, maybe someone can clear things up. I live in Columbus, Columbus is bowl shaped as it dips down in elevation. Is it true that is less likely for a tornado to "touch down" inside the city due to the change in elevation and temperature?

Cities are less likely to have tornados because they retain heat and have structures that break up the air flow. Think of it like a therma shield around the city. Now, higher winds can be expected, but tornadoes are less likely to touchdown.

I remember there was a huge power-outage due to what I think was Hurrican Ike. It took down a ton of stuff. And then there has been quite a few wall clouds in Mason, Ohio.

Yeah man I've heard to sky scrapers reflecting the sun off their mirrored glass structure which causes an increase in temperature, like you said a "thermal bubble"

Last year we had a nasty storm in the end of June. I was out of town near Bellefontaine when it hit. Power went out everywhere, we were almost hit by numerous falling trees, one of the cabins was crushed with people inside (Thankfully no one was hurt more than a few scratches), and it was very eventful. It was just strong winds, lots of thunder and lightning. Other than that, I can't think of any that have been recent.

When I lived in Michigan there was a storm that uprooted a 300 foot x 200 foot golf dome, sent it flying and crashed down upside down on the freeway killing some motorists. (either one hellava storm or typical Michigan construction)

The worst weather in Ohio happened about 5 or 6 years ago. Power was out for a couple of days in the Dublin area. Can't remember the last time it flooded but I remember that blizzard in 08.

I was caught outside during the massive windstorm at the end of june last year. I had to run to all of my neighbor's houses only to discover most of them weren't home. I ran half a mile to a freinds house whilst dodging debris. I got a good cardio workout that day.

I remember my grandparents discussing winter storms they had back in the 1930's in Michigan that dropped numerous feet of snow. I wonder what changed? Global Warming?
