Red Dawn Remake

Ellsworth Penning Red Dawn Remake
Source: The Hollywood Reporter July 9, 2008

Screenwriter Carl Ellsworth has been hired to rewrite MGM's Red Dawn, the ultimate homeland invasion story about a new generation of besieged high schoolers.

Dan Bradley, a second unit director and/or stunt coordinator on The Bourne Ultimatum, Spider-Man 3 and the forthcoming Quantum of Solace, will move into the director's chair for the update. Contrafilm's Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson will produce.

"The tone is going to be very intense, very much keeping in mind the post-9/11 world that we're in," says Ellsworth, "As 'Red Dawn' scared the heck out of people in 1984, we feel that the world is kind of already filled with a lot of paranoia and unease, so why not scare the hell out of people again?"

Ellsworth will be working from a story written by Jeremy Passmore. Vincent Newman (A Man Apart) is also acting in a producer capacity.

I've known about this for quite some time. There has been some speculation about what the actual plot will be, especially since the cold war is now over. There has been some talk about a Middle East invasion, as well as the Chinese. Red would work for the Chinese, but I can't see red as a generally arab color. Maybe white? There have even been jokes going around that it would be called "Towel Dawn" or "Turban Dawn". I think those are the last titles we'll see, but I'll see it when it comes out.

That'll be cool. I was watching on TV the other day and my kids just didn't get it. Updated with modern ideals, enemies, weapons...it should be a fun movie.

I loved "Red Dawn". Now having said that, I see no reason to remake it other than to make money. If this is the case, shoot it, print it, and throw it in the trash with all the other remakes that have just dishonored the original.

Red Dawn is a good movie.I own it,it should be interesting seeing the remake when it comes out. They could be using the term "Red Dawn" as in,the day after the invasion.

That is a great movie and one of my favorites. I even wrote a term paper about that netted me an A in the class. Hopefully the remake wont suck (ie: end up as a scifi original on some Saturday Night Release...)

Heres what I wonder about the remake of this great movie:

Can Will Smith do Patrick Swayzes role justice and will he have good chemistry with his love interest Jessica Simpson?

What will McDonalds call the meal based on the movie?

Can one of the Wolverines outrun the giant explosion long enough to jump into the ditch so the flame passes over them?

Does Will Smiths characters bright blue 2009 Ford F-250 or bright red 2009 Chevy Silverado linger on screen long enough and be featured in enough scenes to justify their 20 million dollar sponsoring fee?

Can Will Smith and Martin Lawrence pull off the park bench scene at the end convincingly?

What "artists" hip-hop song will be playing during the Hind scene?

Why are all the badguys using Desert Eagles as sidearms and carrying HK G36s?

Exactly... I thought the same thing about King Kong, Dawn of the Dead 2004, Day of the Dead, I am Legend, and a few other choice remakes... Some films are going on there 3rd and 4th remake when it hasn't even been needed. Hollywood's remakes have been squashing original content for years now, and I'm getting really tired of it. A large % of movies in the past few years have been foreign remakes, usually no where near as good as the originals. Such as The Departed, Vanilla Sky, Psycho, The Shutter, The Eye, The Grudge, The Ring, just about any worthy Asian horror or crime drama has been retool'd, CG'd, and thrown back out onto the US market. Now on the books there planning to remake The Thing for the 3rd time! One of my all time fav. movies, there just going to ruin it ... blah.
