Today was the day...

8 years ago, that a group of evil men, who saw our way of life as a threat to their own, attacked us destroying many lives and attempted to terrorize America into a state of confusion and dismay. Though they succeeded in taking the lives of many Americans, they failed in their attempt to crush our strong resolve and iron clad determination to defend ourselves.

In the years that have followed the September 11th attacks I have seen a steady decline in awareness of the everyday threats of violence that so many countries wish upon us. I have also noticed that our new generation, though young and innocent right now, isn't being taught about world affairs nor being asked to reflect on what could happen should we once again become complacent with ourselves.

An example of this decay in awareness was this morning when I was dropping off my girlfriend’s daughter to her school and the woman who mans the front desk was making conversation with me. I told the kiddo as I was leaving that when they say the pledge of Allegiance in class to "remember what happened this day and why it's important to be thankful." She nodded her head and walked to class. A moment later the woman at the desk looked strangely at me and asked "What's special about today?"..."It's Sept 11th, it's been 8 years.".... "Well yes but what's special about today 8 years ago, is it your daughter's birthday?"....."No. Today was the day terrorists attacked the trade center in New York and destroyed over 3000 American Lives and started what has now been an on going war against Terrorism all over the world, maybe you forgot about that part." She frowned at my sarcasm and just said, "Oh, yeah that's right".

I held my tongue from further comment as I knew it wouldn't have ended well had I continued insulting her clear disregard for the RECENT history of her own country.

I ask that anyone who knows what happened today, or read this thread, takes a minute of silence to stop and think about the hundreds of thousands of military and government personnel who fight for our way of life each day. Whether it's on the Congress floor, at your local street corner in protest, or over in a land where you get to wake up to gun fights and war all around you. Take a minute...and understand what it means to actually wear the uniforms we play "fake war" in each weekend.

Always remember September 11th, 2001. And never forget those who attacked us, or else we will only wish it upon ourselves again.

Semper Fi America.

Well spoken Aaron, well spoken. I think it a little sad that a day like today has become rather mundane.

Don't forget the 2993 deaths, the 341 NYFD, or the thousands of men and women who responded to the war effort and never returned.

As a society we seem to all to quick to forget so we can return to our mundane lives without the thought of what evil was rained down on us. I will never forget those men and women that killed in this attack ever.

In homeroom at school today, I asked all the sophomores that I lead to take a minute of silence and remember what happened on this day 8 years ago. The president of st.x also delivered a beautiful homily at mass earlier asking us all to remember those that have gone to defend our country and those that parished doing so. Whether you agree with the war or not we can not demonize our soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen and coast guards. Our firefighters, EMTs and law enforcement officers. Or many agencies and organizations that protect the way we live. The least we can do is take a moment to remember.

I went to Ground Zero To drop off Hazmat Trailers. I stood right there and smelled the smell of smoldering ashes as glass fell around me. Standing in front of Hugh piles of what used to be skyscrapers my wife ask me "just look for something you recognize not steel" after about ten minuets I pointed out the back of a desk chair. I will remember that forever as I will those that lost their lives around the U.S.A that day.
God Bless the U.S.A.

I still remember where I was and hell what I was wearing that september day. I'll never forget seeing the second tower get hit on live tv. I'll never forget watching people jumb to there deaths opposed to burning alive. I'll never forget the collapse of the towers. I'll never forget that day or the images that are forever burned into my memory for as long as I live.

I feel bad because I honestly don't remember what I was doing when it happened. Maybe it's because I was in first grade, I don't know.

Anyways God bless everyone who perished in the attack. God bless all of our soldiers and their family's too.

As I read the previous posts, chills run up and down my spine. I know that I will always remember what I was doing and where I was in 2001. I know that I will look back and tell my grandkids what happened on that day the same way that my grandparents told about Pearl Harbor.

I also know that there will always be Americans who do not remember the past and the sacrifices that others have made to keep them free. It is very sad that this is true. Thankfully there are those who are willing to do extreme acts of violence so that others may sleep peacefully in their beds. Thats why I am proud to be an American.

Very well put Aaron.
When I was driving into work this morning, I saw four of the six flags that were not flying at half staff. One of them was a post office. Needless to say I was saddened by that.
There's a band named Thrice who has a song called 'Broken Lungs.' In it they wrote, " Cause we all watched the buildings fall, and watched the scales fall from our eyes." And that's just it, that day the scales did fall from our eyes. Race, religion, political stance... none of it mattered anymore.. All that mattered was helping each other out, and having each other's backs. Well.... That didn't last very long..
I still remember exactly where I was and what I was doing that day. I will never forget till the day I die. I was sitting in photography class developing some film when someone barged in and turned on the TV... I sat and watched as the second plane struck. I watched as reports came in about the Pennsylvanian flight going down, and then hearing the report of the Pentagon getting hit as well. Most people who still remember the Towers, seem to forget that there were FOUR planes that went down that day.
I hope and pray that deep down inside, everyone still remembers what happened.

I was on my way to a job in Dayton, listening to Howard Stern on the radio. I remember laughing at what they were talking about, some striper that came on to show of her body and Howard was making fun of her face. Then all of a sudden they start freaking out about what someone just said to them in the broadcast booth. Howard then said that the one of the towers was on fire. After a bit of frantic word's and alarmed voice's, he started to explain what was happening. I looked over to my co-worker, both are jaws dropped in aww. When we got to the job, we watch in horror the events on the tv. We did not work that day but sat there in a strangers home and watched the event's as they were happening. We were they for 4 hrs just watching the tv with this couple, until the man looked at me and said go home boy's and be with your families. The drive back home was quite, except for the radio. We did not talk, just listened.
