Updates to AO.

With the fund raiser, we've been also updating AO and I'm going down a quick run down of what we've done so far and what we plan to do in the near future. This is sort of a road map, where we've been and where we are going.

1. We've moved servers - as everyone knows. This has had it's bugs, as the old software and the new server don't always place nice. AO's current software was designed for a dedicated server. Now, AO rests in the clouds. New software will help fix the down time we've had recently.

2. We changed registration a bit, hopefully to improve the emails being sent out. However, as we've done this - we've had to go back to manual approval of new accounts. So keep with us on this, we'll process new accounts a few times a day and get to any new accounts ASAP. This should be fixed with new software.

3. New forums! For retailers, we've now divided our retailer section into two areas. Members, please keep this in mind now too.

First, we have Ohio Retailers - this will be for Ohio Retailers only! Advertisements go here. With new software, we will be considering banners / advertisement on the site as well. Members, feel free to ask (polite) questions, reply back to retailers, etc. If you have a problem with a retailer, please do not make it public first.

Second, we have Non-Ohio retailers. This is pretty self explanatory. If you're not an Ohio (or near by) retailer, this is your forum.

4. New classifieds rules. There were some bugs with it (and confusion on our part, the Admin's) - we're working it out and it should be fixed by later on today or tomorrow (3/14 & 3/15). The new rules, once fixed, will be only the original author of the post, can reply to the thread. Please keep in mind, the 3 day / 72 hour bump rule will still apply. This should get rid of a lot of unnecessary infractions, etc.

5. New software is coming. With the donations, not only is the new server hosting paid for a bit, but we should have enough scratch to get some new software. This will help us with spam bot control, as we are on a bit dated software.

As always, the admin team is always looking for feed back. Please leave a post here, leave a note in my PM box (Fox), catch me on chat, send a carrier pigeon, whatever.

We have a few more ideas that we're working on, but we're always looking for more on how to grow the forum.

Please keep donating, as AO is the hub of the community and we want to keep it running. Also keep in mind, the admin team and mod team do this as volunteers. We do this to support you, the community. So we need your support back as well as your feed back, to make this community better.

Thanks as always,
Fox & Locutus.

When I talked to Locutus this week, I got the impression that many of the bugs will be fixed when he updates to the new forum software in the next few months. It's just that he'd have to convert the old code over to the new software anyway. I'd imagine that minor bugs will likely remain until the new forum software is implemented. I'm sure he can elaborate more on it than me, but that's the jist of it.

I got them, no worries. I get on average anywhere from 10 to 30 PM's a day.

This is 100% true. We're working in the confines of the old software right now. We should have the new forum software here sooner rather then later. We may continue to tweak the old forum software while we can, but in the grand scheme, new software is going to come and hopefully give us a lot more flexibility.

If it's any help, I'll report that I can't post in my own sale thread either.
Just tried to do that a few moments ago, no dice.

I am slightly confused on something. You say AO is now in the clouds, but Locutus said it was on a dedicated sever?

Thanks for all the hard work you guys are putting into this!

Clouds as in a cloud drive or something, which still requires a server so...

Cloud = fancy marketing term for when another company hosts your data in such a way that you really don't have worry about the particular hardware involved in the hosting service. AO is still on a server.

*edit* and the expectation is generally that you should be able to access your data from anywhere with an internet connection.

More cloud computing terminology.

Ah okay. Same as I do with the schilling productions website. Makes sense. Cool Cool

I am all for fancy marketing terms when the term makes sense

Note to self: Stop using business magazines to learn about it tech. They dont explain the working of the technology

Like Sky referred to, a Cloud server is just a server somewhere "in the cloud" of the internet. The service is a dedicated cloud server service, so there is no specific physical server that runs your website, but multiple servers that all act together. These services guarantee redundency for when server drives die, or drives fail, etc. They can even have multiple servers at different locations around the country or around the world, so if one location has a problem (like a power outage), other sites can back them up.

For example, when the last AO server died last year, it was a single dedicated web server. The drive had to be removed and the data had to be recovered from that drive. With a cloud server, there are multiple redundant backup servers to take over, so if one goes down, there is no interruption in service, and more importantly, AO stays up and running with little or no effect to the user.

The downside is that cloud servers are generally more expensive and there are usually tiered costs based on web traffic, which AO gets a lot of. But from now on, things should run a lot better and a lot more reliably.

I've never heard of a "Cloud" drive.

It's all a marketing term for "Server" or "Extra Large Storage Device for Internet Traffic".

Edit: sniped

You're right, a lot of companies use it as a marketing term. Think Apple's iCloud service. But really it's an I.T. term that has been around for just about as long as wide area networking has been around. I know that there have been cloud-based storage and server solutions for over 10 years, and probably even longer.

The term "cloud" is basically derived from the ambiguity of the internet as a whole. The internet IS technically the cloud, and is generally accessible from just about anywhere. So cloud computing or networking can mean a variety of things. From file storage like Dropbox, to servers, even things like cloud computing where multiple computers can be used to crunch data (Like SETI@Home, etc). Anywhere availability of data or computing is what some think is the future, though I remain unconvinced overall. But for AO and web servers, cloud servers are definitely the future, just for the sake of redundency.

Technology is plagued with bad marketing terminology that usually drives IT people nuts. 4G is a prime example. True 4G refers to wireless 100M or better. But cell providers call anything faster than their 3G service "4g" even when it isn't to actual spec. All this does is make marketing terminology useless rather than having precise and accurate definitions it muddles everything together and confuses the masses into thinking their getting something they really aren't.

I think we need to change the term "chairsofting" to "Cloud Airsofting."

It does make me mad. That's why I am not marketing computers, but just work on them.
