2/27/12 A Day to Remember

Posted 04-12-2012 at 10:33 PM by Vapor

It was a normal Monday at Chardon Highschool for almost every student before 7:39 that morning. I guess I should start off by introducing myself and giving a little background information. I am a 17 year old student enrolled in Chardon High School and Auburn Career Center. I study Emergency Medial Services at ACC and I'm a Police Explorer at Willoughby Police Department. I am also a Private at the United States Army Cadet Corps (Hooah) and a Police explorer at Millersburg PD.

Now, enough of myself and back to the real reason I started this Blog. Most of my friends go to Auburn in the morning and come back for evening classes at CHS (including Danny, Russell and Nick). I wasnt too close with Demetrius and hardly knew Joy at all. But I was really good friends with Danny and he actually got me into airsoft when I was just 10 years old and thus here I am. I knew Nate (bullet grazed his ear) and also knew Nick pretty well.

That morning I sat in between Danny and Russell at promptly 7:23 AM. After a brief conversation with Danny about some science test I left the table at about 7:28 AM. I believe the first police call was recieved at 7:38 AM so I am assuming at arounnd 7:36 AM or so the shooting began. Anyways, like I said I left at about 7:28 AM to go visit another friend across the lunch room. When the shots were fired I first thought that it was the Geauga County Sheriffs DPT. doing the disaster day training. I've heard a 9MM fired indoors without ear protection before and the gunshot sounded nothing like that. I'm getting completely off track, a girl had told everyone get into the teachers lounge but only about 25 kids listened. Once inside I tried to calm everyone down and stopped a few kids from climbing out the window. I told a girl to dial 9/11 and just to wait it out. Like I said, that's not what I'm writing this blog about. To complain about my friends, how shocked I am or anything like that. I'm not here to say they were bullies or demean the victims or the shooter. Its pointless to argue what happened or what didn't happen.

What I'm really writing about is to ask the community a few questions.

I'm sure your all tired of hearing about this stuff just as much as I am, so I'll make this quick. I planned to write this blog a few weeks ago. Needless to say I put it off along with other things on AO. I deleted all my Pictures off my profile and now I have my photos of all my new gear and guns but I'm way to lazy as I said.

Would any guys be willing to start a group (NOT a team) to go to a few events in honor of the victims?

Honestly I think it would be great to just make some patches.

Or Maybe, if we could pull some strings we could get a fundraising event. With as much of the proceeds as possible to going to any of the many funds created for the family's. Including the Chardon Healing Fund. Now, I'm sure there are going to be someone saying "Hey! you guys get a prom at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!" To which I would retort, "Hey dumbass, The family's can't go to prom."

Feel free to drop your 2 cents in my metaphorical blog/ piggy bank. Everything is appreciated and I apologize in advance if my blog is choppy and poo-filled.

That's some heavy stuff, and I admire your ability to acknowledge these events, and I greatly admire your heroism in the teachers lounge.Personally, being a sophomore, I'm pretty sure I'd be one of those kids diving through the closest window, haha.

As far as a fundraising even is concerned, I'm sure there are mroe than enough willing people in the AO community to make it worthwhile, and if someone took charge and asked around some of the field owners, maybe even some of them would give all profits to whichever charity it would be we are donating to.

    Definatly gotta bounce this around.

Thanks, being as I'm not too well known around the forums any help in spreading the word would be greatly appreciated. I also take no credit in the Teachers Lounge. I could have left the lounge and began to start BLS and bleeding control on the victims but I guess it all looks easy in hind-sight.

*Edit* I realize that I didn't have any personal protective equitment on me to properly start BLS and BC but I still should have made some attempt to leave the lounge and start at least BLS on anyone of the victims. Even though it may have not done much because the victims who died all suffered massive brain injuries from a gunshot wound to the cranium. I still think everyday that I should have. But what's done is done.

I hear ya CJ! It hit all of Ohio pretty hard. I'm just glad it didn't get as extreme as Colombine or Virginina Tech. So what about the patch idea? I think it's the least we could do as a community. I wish there was a more involved member that went to CHS but I guess I'm it.

I personally think this is an amazing idea, id sure as hell wear a patch. Sure it wasn't as big as Columbine or Virginia Tech, but shouldn't we all be happy about that? There was still ohio teenagers that loss their lives from a coward.. Vapor, you're a hero of the situation bro, props.

I am down for everything you said. I remember that day, it was a few days after the Washington State shooting, I believe Regan and I were in Geometry B (he's a junior, I'm a sophomore). And I was checking the news on my phone and I saw it, I was in shock that it was a school in Ohio. I admire what you did, and if that would've happened in Mason Highschool, I don't think it would go as smoothly with 4,300 kids. I will buy a patch, and I will talk to Franc "Blade" about making a fundraising event.

I don't see myself as any type of hero but thank you. I'm putting together a patch as we speak. I plan on having three maybe four colors available. Black, OD green, a colorful patch (American Flag colors) and a ACU style one (Same color as the standard ACU style patchs. Maybe upon request I could get a desert tan. I don't know how a desert tan patch would look as I personally don't like them.

**Edit** Also, what size patch would you guys be interested in? I was thinking a standard 2X3 such as an American Flag Patch.

No, you shouldn't have left the lounge and started treating victims. Despite any training you have received, the bottom line is you are still a student and the school is responsible for you. You could have become a victim also had you left. If they tell you to stay put, that it what you do. I can understand wanting to help. That is human nature. Once while I was out driving for work, I passed by a parking lot and heard a squad call on the scanner for that location. Ilater learned that a baby died after being left in a car. To this day I think that I should have stopped.

There was no teacher in the lounge. So for Hours we had no idea what was going on. Thank you for your advice mac. Also I am so sorry to hear about the baby in a car. It saddens me to see that parents to this day still believe it is safe to leave a child in a car. Even with windows rolled down or for only a few minutes.

To clear it up, even though it was a teachers lounge there were no teachers ever present until about 11:00 maybe 11:30. They didn't tell us anything and left after about 30 seconds. Then about an hour later a U.S. Marshal escorted us out. So in reality I was the only person who had anything remotely close to "experience" which was basically none.

As a chardon resident myself, i would love to see this happen. Also for the patch idea, it would be neat to add in the school colors somewhere in it. Example would be a Red and black ribbon with the border colors of what you said above.

So, Does anyone have an idea of a place in NEO to get a few patches made? I drew up a design and went to a place a few miles from Chardon. But the prices seemed a bit steep from my research so I passed on them.
