Why NOT to preorder PC games

Posted 10-18-2010 at 11:47 PM by Loki
Me being the Fallout fan that I am, I decided that I'd preorder Fallout: New Vegas for the PC, and being the dutiful Fallout fan that I am, I went to pick it up at the store.

So I come home to install it, and I get this message:

Note the time and date circled in red.

So I did some searching only to discover that Steam doesn't unlock the game until 3AM our time, because apparently their servers are on the West Coast.

So I wasted time, gas, and money to get a game right when it was released, only to not be able to play it for two days because I have class at 830AM, followed by other stuff that fills my schedule until Thursday.

Thank you Valve, for ****ting on my parade, asshats.

I don't even bother with going to the store and buying PC games, since most you can just download from the retailer. Blizzard actually allowed you to install Starcraft 2 a week before it was a released, so on release day all you had to do was pay and play.

It's nice when STEAM allows pre-loads, but I felt the same on MoH's release day. They didn't let you download it until 1 PM our time rather than midnight.

    But you got extra stimpaks!!!!!>!

Steam is notorious for allowing you to buy a game and then be unable to download it due to server issues. Pre-ordered or not.

LOL, Darkstar! I don't preorder games. I've never come across a game that got me that excited. If its a game I really lke, I wait until a Collector's Edition comes out with Expansions and patches.

Dealing with regular software bugs and glitches has taught me to avoid jumping out there to get new software. Game publishers are the same way.

Literally the exact same thing happened to me with borderlands. Made me hate steam for a while, but I got over it..... eventually.... until I finished borderlands, and realized that the last quarter of the game sucked

ive done this so many times with so many games i know what to expect. Valve is west coast and they do things on their time, which is about 3 hours later than you want it. When HL2 was released i was up at 3am playing that ***** until about 8am the next day until i passed out.

I've pre ordered the following on Steam:

    Left 4 dead 2
    Civilization V
    Bad Company 2
    Sniper: Ghost Warrior
    World in Conflict
    Worms Reloaded

If memory serves they all unlocked way before 3am, except for L4D2 which was a giant fiasco for Valve because they messed something up with the decryption. Pre ordering stuff on steam is so fun though because you alway get free stuff for TF2 with it

Sol, I dont agree with your mirror sunglasses, but your are correct, consoles win. Feel free to come over 11/9 for CoD in 3D on our TV, or play on the 80 in downstairs!!!! All will be good!

scortch, he did buy discs. All games that are steam powered, disc or download are required to activate and have a steam connection while trying to play them.

As for buying physical copies, i dont do that. I let steam pre download and then i unlock it when the game is released.

I still pick up hard copies but like Mav said some require steam authentication.

Civilization V was my most recent PC game that installed from the disc but required Steam to activate.

As for console win... EA dropped the ball a few times when their servers weren't active for midnight releases on the east coast.

Console wins only because it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to play a lot of games.
